welcome!
Welcome to the department of physics and astronomy at LSU! The department
is actively involved in research in astronomy and astrophysics, gravitation
and relativity, nuclear and particle physics, materials and
condensed matter physics, atomic/molecular/optical physics, quantum optics
and computing, and medical and health physics. We have close associations with the Laser
Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO) in nearby Livingston,
Louisiana; the 1.5 GeV electron synchrotron at LSU's Center for Advanced Microstructures
and Devices (CAMD); the Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center in Baton Rouge; the
Center for Computation and Technology (CCT) at LSU, home to one of the fastest
supercomputers in the world; and the Landolt Observatory on campus and the
Highland Road Park Observatory a few miles off campus. Our faculty, research
staff, and students use facilities at the National Magnet Lab, Sandia and Oak
Ridge National Laboratories, Fermilab, and CERN; the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
in Canada and the Kamiokande Laboratory in Japan; radioactive ion beam facilities
in Florida, Michigan, and Canada; the Auger cosmic ray observatory in Argentina;
NASA satellites in space and ground-based telescopes at Kitt Peak, in Chile,
and Hawaii; and balloon launching facilities in the Antarctic. We have opportunities
and support funds for good undergraduate and graduate students in our research
groups, and invite you to take a look at our web pages and contact us if we
can answer any questions.
