H2 SenseMon in Science Segments

G. Gonzalez,  last updated March 31, 2008.

March 6, 2008: finished defining segments and recommendations.
March 31, 2008: Included intersections with science times, including injection times and interval durations.

I calculated the median SenseMon range in each H2 science segment in S5, and the standard deviation of each segment longer than 2048 seconds. The standard deviation is a rough measure of "glitchiness", with the histogram showing a long tail. I ranked the segments according to their standard deviation, and investigated reasons for the large stand rd deviation reading the elog, especially entries by operators and scimons. I suggest DQ flags for the segments investigated and sometimes other times, arising from the investigations.

Histogram of range standard deviation in science segments

H2 Science Segments, ranked by SenseMon standard deviation

The plots are centered on the center time of each segment, with +/- 6 hours to each side; the horizontal and vertical ranges are the same in all plots.
The segments are in descending order of SenseMon standard deviation, for segments longer than 2048 sec.
Suggested flags are in bold magenta.

From the inspection shown in the table, I came up with a list of "H2SICK" segments to flag.

H2 SICK Flag
Times in science segs (gps start, gps stop, H2 science seg#).
(The last column generated by segwizard is not the duration, it is copied from original science segments file).
The file above does not include injection times.

Finally, we suggest a "bad month" flag: H2BADMONTH flag between June 12 12:00 UTC and July 11 20:00 UTC
Details about this month are found in here, where additional glitchy flags for individual segments will also be defined.

4 821755905-821783065 5.5+/-1.5 Jan 20 2006 01:31:31 UTC MMT3 optical lever glitches, they are flagged already, starting on H2-266 on Jan 11 14:34, ending on H2-325 on Jan 20 15:38.
However, some segments near the end are so glitchy that the analysis of the segments is probably biased.

After doing well most of the day and evening, H2 noise started acting up again mid-way through this shift. After a few forced lock drops(H2-2748/49/50) which required alignments, its now again back to behaving well."
Scimon (S. Giampanis) mentions problems with RM, but not clearly related to this segment.

15 857679613-857682040 6.8+/-1.2 Mar 11 2007 20:19:59 UTC Stefan Ballmer follows up H1H2 coincident noisy times (!), suspected H2 1.2 Hz stack mode and unknown coupling into H1, between 20:30-20:45 UTC.
There are also wind flags near this time, maybe it was just wind ringing up H2 stack and H1 too, but wind flags are only on for few seconds.

XXX Elog suggests H2 problem was seen earlier too - should be followed up. Also, there's a mention of another H1H2 "event", but no timing info. (Segment H2-2380 with a noisy end, coincident with noisy H1, is Rank#119, but it has wind flags explaining the noise.)

Also from elog, ETM problems sometimes affecting DARM are identified, we should probably follow up with a flag.

21 866338873-866353395 6.6+/-1.1 Jun 20 2007 01:40:59 UTC A segment in a very bad month: serious drop in range seen near day 600 in S5 plot. Problem starts on June 12 (H2-2814, Rank#120), although at the time it was referred as an old problem: "On the last hour the broad noise was present". The range becomes higher and stable on July 11 20:00 UTC, after an RM suspension problem was fixed. H2-2937 had 7Mpc and only seismic glitches at the beginning, later segments were OK. Keita says that the RM problem was only one of probably two different problems.
Some segments in this month are glitchy, others simply have low range, but I suggest we use a long H2BADMONTH flag between June 12 12:00 UTC and July 11 20:00 UTC, and use "H2SICK" flags for glitchy times, like the end of this segment. A different page shows all the segments in this bad month, with suggested flags.

Problem started previous day, with H2-2134, as noted by Corey and seen in Rank#65, but even earlier in H2-2119, Rank#152). Problem came and went several times, reported the scimon and also noticed in Rank#128, 159.
