Chien-Te Chen: CT came to the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 with a master’s degree from the National Taiwan University in Taipei. His thesis was titled “De-excitation Electron Spectroscopy and Ion Fragmentation Following Soft X-Ray Absorption,” and was awarded in 1985. While a graduate student at PENN he received the Werner Teutsche Memorial Prize from the Department of Physics and the First Annual Dean’s Scholar Award. Two of the most cited Chen papers from his thesis are:

  • The Study and Design of a High Transmission, High Resolution Toroidal Grating Monochromator for Soft X-Ray Radiation, C.T. Chen, E.W. Plummer and M.R. Howells, Nucl. Inst. and Tech. 222, 103 (1984).

  • Dynamics of Adsorbate Core Hole Decay, C.T. Chen, R.A. DiDio, W.K. Ford and E.W. Plummer, Phys. Rev. B 32, 8434 (1985).

Most of the thesis work was accomplished at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory at (see pictures below). After completing his thesis, CT became a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Labs, where he pioneered the development and utilization of high resolution soft x-ray monochromators for the study of solids. In 1995 he accepted the position as director of the Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, Taiwan (http://www.nsrrc.org.tw).

Wayne Ford: Wayne worked with the group in a joint project with Xerox in Webster, New York. He received his Ph.D. in theoretical condensed matter physics from Brown University. Two of his most significant papers from this period are:

  • Auger Electron Ion Coincidnece Studies in Soft X-Ray Induced Fragmentation of N2 (W. Eberhardt, E.W. Plummer, I.W. Lyo, R. Carr and W.K. Ford), Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 207 (1987).

  • Fragmentation of CO and Transition Metal Carbonyls Following Soft X-Ray Excitation, W. Eberhardt, C.T. Chen, W.K. Ford, E.W. Plummer and H.R. Moser, DIET II, Springer Series in Surface Sci. 4, 50 (1985).

Wayne went to Montana State University for a short period and then moved to Intel in Oregon.
