Science History

This picture was taken in early 1967 in the basement of Clark Hall at Cornell University. The apparatus is a glass Field Ion Microscope pumped by Hg diffusion pumps. My thesis was titled "Binding of the 5d-Transition Elements on Single Crystal Tungsten Surfaces." The work that lead to the Nottingham Prize was published in the following paper.

Atomic Binding of Transition Metals on Clean Single-Crystal Tungsten Surfaces, E. W. Plummer and T.H. Rhodin, J. Chem. Phys. 49, 3479 (1968).
