PhIOS: Physics Intensive
Orientation for Students

LSU Logo

Welcome Physics Majors!!

PhIOS is a one week intensive program specifically for incoming Physics, Astronomy, or Medical Physics majors. This program is designed to help these students make the transition to the expectations of college prior to the start of the fall semester.

Participants will:

  • Learn important study skills
  • Get a jump start on the course content
  • Get a copy of the text book and a student response handset "clicker" (a $200 value)
  • Meet faculty, graduate students, and university staff
  • Learn about research opportunities (paid ones!) in the department

Our program will run in conjunction with the BIOS program offered by the Department of Biological Sciences. The BIOS program has proven very effective in helping students stay in the major, and helped them achieve better grades in their biology courses. We expect the same will happen in the physics courses.

How effective has the BIOS program been in helping students? You can find previous years' results and students comments at the BIOS web site.
