In the BSSN formalism a set of auxiliary connection functions $\Gamma^i$ is introduced that simplify the three-dimensional Ricci tensor ${}^{(3)}R_{ij}$ in the same way as the $H^{\mu}$ simplify the four-dimensional Ricci tensor ${}^{(4)}R_{\mu\nu}$ in the formalism adopted by Pretorius.
