   On September 17, via a broadcast e-mail message, I invited faculty from 
across the campus to identify/recommend broad areas of research into which 
new faculty ought to be hired using the funds that have come to LSU through 
the Governor's IT initiative.  I also solicited recommendations regarding 
infrastructure issues that should be addressed if we are going to attract 
and retain top faculty in IT-intensive areas of research and instruction.  
In response to this request, I have received over 40 brief proposals and 
recommendations.   If you are interested in knowing what suggestions have
been submitted, you may browse the following URL, which contains links to

If, after reviewing some or all of the online proposals, you would like
to comment on the ideas that have been submitted, please send an e-mail 
to capital@bit.csc.lsu.edu so that this entire committee can review your
comment.   Please do so in a timely fashion, however, because this
committee will be meeting with me on 16 October to discuss all of the 
submissions.

With advice from this committee, I will recommend to the executive
committee of LSU CAPITAL which proposed ideas should be presented to an
external advisory panel later this fall.   In cases where similar ideas
have been submitted, we may decide to present a consolidated proposal
to the external advisory panel.
