RESEARCH INTERESTS
Professor Imlay was on the faculty of Louisiana State University from 1979 to August 2005 when he became emeritus professor and joined the University of Virginia as Visiting Research Professor. He has participated on neutrino experiments at Fermi National Laboratory and at Los Alamos National Laboratory, on electron-positron experiments at the CESR Laboratory at Cornell University and at the KEK Laboratory in Japan, and on an electron-proton experiment at the DESY Laboratory in Germany. He worked in the Office of High Energy Physics at the Department of Energy from 2003 to 2005 monitoring university grants.
At present, Professor Imlay is working on the MiniBooNE neutrino experiment at Fermilab which is designed to make a definitive check on the possible neutrino oscillation signal seen by the LSND experiment at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This signal, if confirmed, would likely imply the existence of sterile neutrinos in addition to the the presently known neutrinos and thus would be of great physics interest. On the other hand, not confirming the signal would be very helpful in clarifying our understanding of neutrino oscillations.
Professor Imlay is planning to participate with the UVa HEP group on the CMS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. This experiment will be at the forefront of experimental particle physics for the next decade and will focus on the search for the elusive Higgs particle(s) and for supersymmetry in 14 TeV collisions of protons at the large hadron collider.
