"How to Untwinkle a Star"

Atmospheric turbulence severely limits the imaging capabilities of ground-based telescopes. However, adaptive optical techniques based on artificial guidestars allow the deleterious effects of atmospheric turbulence to be substantially reduced. Following a brief review of some basic concepts of adaptive optics, attention will be focused on the use of laser-excited mesospheric sodium as an artificial guidestar.
