RESEARCH INTERESTS

We study the interaction of very intense, short laser pulses with atomic systems. In particular, we are interested in the sub-femtosecond pulses of extreme ultraviolet radiation, so-called attosecond pulses, that can be generated in this interaction. The detection of attosecond pulses in 2001 presented a major experimental breakthrough in modern atomic physics. In analogy with the use of femtosecond laser pulses in studying the dynamics of atoms and molecules during a chemical reaction, attosecond pulses can probe the electron dynamics within an atom, for example as it interacts with an intense field. To describe the generation process, we have to solve both the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and Maxwell's wave equation in extreme conditions.
