    LECTURES: M-W-F 11:30am-12:30pm, Room 106 Nicholson Hall

TEXT: The required text is Principles of Quantum Mechanics by R. Shankar (2nd Edition). I will also draw pretty heavily from Merzbacher. I recommend that you consider it as secondary text.

    CONTENT:

    • This course covers the principles of non-relativistic quantum mechanics, which forms a basis for many modern fields of physics reserach.
    • In this semester we focus on the basic principles, one-dimensional problems, and symmetries. This covers essentially Chap. 1-12 of Shankar, which the exception of Chap. 8 (which will be skipped this semester).
    • In class we will discuss the concepts and work problems. You are expected to participate actively in class.
    • However, not all topics can be covered in really sufficient detail in class. You also need to study the text and work the homework problems.

    HOMEWORK:

    • Homework assignments are posted online.
    • They will generally be due on Wed. at the beginning of class.
    • I like to discuss homework in class soon after it is due when it is fresh in your minds, therefore late assignments are not accepted.

    GRADING SCHEME:

    • Your grade for the semester will be based upon homework, a mid-term and final exam. The overall weighting is broken down as follows:
      • Homework 30%
      • Mid-term exam 30% (around mid October)
      • Final Exam 40%
    • The mid-term and final are in-class exams. Make-up exams will only be given under very special circumstances.
